You'll learn the three steps to permanent sobriety, the four causes of dependency, and how to create your own personalized treatment program-one that gets to the real, underlying causes of dependency. The book also shows how your thoughts, emotions, and beliefs are key factors in your recovery and how you can stimulate your body's self-healing potential to be forever free of dependency. The Alcoholism and Addiction Cure will show you how to end relapse, end your craving, and end your suffering.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing   July 23, 2010

2 out of 5 stars NOT WHAT ONE WOULD EXPECT...............   July 21, 2010
Roger Anthony (Westwood, NJ)
The title leads one to expect more from this publication than they should. The main message is that it is most important to identify the actual reasons for alcholism and addiction, then deal with the healing. There is lot of sound advice about what to do and what kind of medical help and therapy to seek. But there is also a lot of California "holistic" babble about "Traditional Chinese Medicine, spirituality, yadda, yadda.... and an obvious and tedious campaign for their (very expensive) program at Passages.

Way too much information about Pax's problem, you could skip Chapter 3 completlely, unless you really want to learn all the sordid details of one person's relapse after relapse.

I believe that some people could benefit from SOME of the book, but if you expect what the title implies, you will be indeed disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book for A Solution to Your Alcohol or Drug Problem!   July 16, 2010
Melanie B. Solomon (Ocala, FL)

This book was extremely helpful and inspiring for my recovery. The book addresses the root of why people become alcoholics and addicts. Alcohol abuse and addiction are most often the outcome of different personal issues, even if we have a tendency to do excess in our lives, or if we have a genetic predisposition to addicting substances. Once those issues are identified, we can then begin to overcome them, and THAT is the start of actual recovery. Each person who struggles with addiction has a different story. That's why what works for me may or may not work for you. You have to know what ALL of your options are, and pick one that resonates with you because THAT is the best predictor for your success. The book advises we can't categorize all addicts into one program and expect the same result of success for each person. Like the book mentions, many such as me have tried several methods, each not doing much for our recovery. I was on the "recovery merry-go-round" for over 12 YEARS going to rehab, to sober living, to AA, the 12 steps, partial hospitalizations,to staying sober for about 6 months to a year, then relapsing, ending up in the ER almost dying, then BACK to another rehab, teaching the SAME thing...AA and the 12-steps! This was intended to do well, but in the end had a much more negative ending then positive.I felt hopeless. But NOT anymore...there IS hope! There are MANY alternatives to AA, which are discussed in this book.

The book encourages us to think positive, stay in the positive, and act positive. Positive thinking is SO important, even if you might think it sounds a bit "silly"! We all have this "self-talk", and for most of us, it is VERY negative, ALL the time. We tell ourselves, "You're not good enough. You're too fat. He doesn't like you. You're too ugly." And the list goes on and on. We HAVE to change this internal dialogue, and at the beginning, it will take practice because you are not used to doing it. But just TRY it and SEE the results! Start talking to yourselves, and say, "I AM good enough. I AM beautiful. I CAN do ANYTHING I want in life, etc." Treat this like an experiment and see the results for yourself! It DOES work...trust me!

This book has already changed my life for the good and I am NOW confident of being sober for the first time! I have a reason to stay sober, as I now have self worth, which is also what the book advises. I finally started to wrestle with my internal issues and am overcoming them. My problems are now identified, and I discovered why I was drinking in the first place. It's as simple as that, really, at least for me!

We aren't powerless as is often taught by AA, but we are to use our power to overcome the problem of addiction. Also, the labels of addict / alcoholic often devalue a person and can predetermine the likelihood of relapse which is around 86%-95% nationally. I found the that the label did already predetermine the outcome of relapse and the helplessness it inflicted personally. Truly how difficult it is to hear repeatedly I will NEVER overcome my addiction from counselors, rehab, and AA, and repeating OVER and OVER, "I am an alcoholic", or "I am an addict". This negative affirmation just brought about negative consequences for me so I just don't advise this for most people.

I feel for those who still live and suffer with this label and hope they can find freedom in the words of this book. This book provided a good holistic way to get CURED of your alcoholism and/or drug addiction. It offers many alternatives to Alcoholics Anonymous, and provides for a way OUT of your addiction to a healthy life. This book would be a very good addition to the MUST READ, "AA Not the Only Way; Your One Stop Resource Guide to 12-Step Alternatives," which not only provides a multitude of options that are available, but also has a comprehensive directory of licensed professionals and treatment programs all over the U.S. and abroad, including ALL of their contact information! Go to http://www.aanottheonlyway.com.

I am excited to step out into the world with a new perspective about myself! It's amazing how simple this book lays out the plan of being recovered, and it may be quicker than you think. I wish you all the best in your own personal journey back to good health!

5 out of 5 stars Best Recovery Book Ever!!   July 12, 2010

I can't begin to explain how helpful and inspiring this book is towards my recovery. The book addresses the root of why people become alcoholics and addicts. In the book, alcohol abuse and addiction are most often the outcome of different personal issues, even if we have a tendency to do access in our lives or if we have a genetic predispotion to addicting substances. Once those issues are identified, we can then begin to overcome them, and start the path of recovery. Each person who struggles with addiction has a different story. The book advises we can't categorize all addicts into one program and expect the same result of success for each person. Like the book mentions, many such as me have tried ample methods, each bearing little fruit. I have done rehab, AA, the 12 steps, partial hospitalizations, talk therapy, all of which were intended to do well, but in the end had a much more negative ending then positive. However, without having tried those methods, I doubt I would have seen the power of this book and its prescribed methods. I tried to intellectually accept what was being told, but hearing so many theories, it literally became a confusing mind game and mental battle which never stopped...I felt hopeless.

Listed in the book are the 4 main causes for addiction, and it fit me perfectly, and I imagine it will for most addicts. The book hit the nail in the head, discover the reasons why. I truly I came out with a negative view of myself causing self loathing and many conflicting viewpoints from multiple counselors and therapies. No wonder it was difficult to stop regardless of consequence, even though I truly wanted to. I couldn't get past the barriers of my conflicting thought processes and I was an alcoholic...what was I to do with this incurable illness.

He lists pertinent examples of those who have been to different rehabs before coming to their center.

The book encourages us to think positive, stay in the positive, and act positive. Many of us were advised the only way to acheive this was the 12 steps, which may be true for some, but it can be discovered outside the confines of AA etc and through this book and its methods.

This book has already changed my life for the good and I am NOW confident of being sober for the first time! I have a reason to stay sober, truly as I have worth, which is also what the book advises. I finally started to wrestle with my internal issues and am overcoming them. My problems are now identified, and I discovered why I was drinking in the first place. It's as simple as that, really, at least for me!

The lightbulb went off for the first time and I can see more clearly, where after years of counsel I didnt. We aren't powerless as often taught, but we are to use our power to overcome the problem of addiction. Also, the labels of addict / alcoholic often devalue a person and can predetermine the likelihood of relapse which is around 86% nationally. I found the that the label did already predetermine the outcome of relapse and the helplessness it inflicted personally. The thought of never being able to recover is horrific & and the 12 step program made me hopeless, or at least how the steps were presented to me. Truly how difficult it is to hear repeatedly I will NEVER overcome my addiction from counselors, rehab, and AA. This is the first time I have heard the goal is to be fully recovered for good! I truly learned that I was just learning to mask my problems, not unveil them and conquer them.

I feel for those who still live with this label and pray they can find freedom in the words of this book.

I am excited to step out into the world with a new perspective about myself! It's amazing how simple this book lays out the plan of being recovered, and it may be quicker than you think. This $20 book just may save your life and everything you hope and dream of.

Rossa Forbes is a contributor to Goddess Shift: Women Leading for a Change

I write about schizophrenia, not alcoholism, but I find The Alcoholism and Addiction Cure very informative even if alcoholism or addiction is not your particular problem. On the surface, schizophrenia seems to have nothing in common with alcoholism and addiction. There are no 12-step programs for schizophrenia. To begin with, the author doesn't shy away from using the word "cure". He doesn't consider alcoholism or addiction either "incurable" or a "disease". These are symptoms that are coping mechanisms that one has chosen in response to life's pain. Medical professionals who refuse to use the word "cure" in the context of certain mental health problems deprive people of hope and virtually guarantee that their problems are forever managed, never cured.

Mental health professionals are being disingenuous when they say that the cause of schizophrenia or alcoholism or addiction is unknown. Some people will stop right there and think to themselves, "well, if a doctor says this, there's not point in my looking any further." It is true that there is no one neat scientific explanation that can explain away the cause, but that doesn't mean that a cause or causes cannot be found. Chris Prentiss makes a clear cut case for finding the cause of the pain by looking at the problem through the prism of the family story. Through my own research and willingness to undertake psychotherapy, I now have some insight into the cause(s) of my son's problems. The causes are both psychological and physiological. I have developed a working theory that makes sense to me. I may be entirely wrong about what the real causes are, but it doesn't really matter because I have noticed whatever we are doing seems to be working. I can empower healing in my son by changing the way I relate with him, by showing conviction that he will recover, and by understanding that his problems have a context.

Chris Prentiss eventually came to realize that his son's descent into alcoholism and addiction was due to the son's deep rooted anger with his father. The family background that he describes in his book provides a plausible explanation for this outcome. Many people will protest that everybody is angry with their father (or their mother) and that most people who are angry with a parent don't descend into drug addiction. Well, actions do make sense if you care enough to pay attention. There is a logic to life.

Another reason why I like the book is because the author maintains that if you want to get to the bottom of your problems, the multiple therapy approach is best and it works faster. Many people can go for years seeing the same therapist and never become well or else not well enough. This may be because they are undergoing the wrong therapy or perhaps because they do not have a good rapport with the therapist. It also may be because they are told they that they are sick individuals and need lifelong meds.

Since the goal for everyone should be to resolve their problems as quickly as possible, people should be free to pick and choose their therapy and their therapist, and use several different therapy approaches. People should be free to choose but in reality they are not, as I have found trying to introduce other therapies while my son was under the care of a psychiatrist. Just because psychiatry is slowly opening the door to acknowledging the value of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for schizophrenia doesn't mean that CBT should be the only therapy employed. CBT may not work for you. Alcoholics Anonymous may not work for you. Chris Prentiss has shown what worked for his son and he has some valid criticisms of the current institutional approach to handling serious mental health issues.
