Gittleman's Best July 26, 2010 Robin Sharp I love this book. It presents a whole body plan for the whole year. I do pretty well on the Fat Flush Plan because I feel like I'm always eating healthy and Ann Louise actually uses some research and science for her plan. Now with this book there are realistic allowances for taste changes during the year. It's easy to eat lots of salad during the summer but once it gets cold eating salads all the time is unrealistic for me.
I also like her inclusion of Bach Flower Remedies and aromatherapy for each season and quick yoga exercises.
I'm a fan of Ann Louise Gittleman, this book feels like it was written for me and I was thrilled when I noticed that it had been autographed.
Diet book review July 15, 2010 C. Sassin Well, another diet book purchase that didn't prove too successful. I appears that the only way I am going to get rid of this fat is to have it nipped, cut, and sucked out. I live in a small town and I can't afford to run around to the big city to get items to make the diet work.
Good but needs addition resources in the book June 28, 2010 Visionbee 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I rated this book a 3.5, for most of the information is good. So instead of reiterating what was good, I have expressed items that can really make or break you from following this diet.
The problems with this book are as follows:
1. There are no substitutes to the some of the more expensive products she recommends. For examples: Flora-key, Fat Flush whey, etc. Only directs you to her distributor "Unikey"
- Have to do a lot of research and digging to get some alternatives: Flora-key use Jarro-Dophilus® + FOS Powder (12 billion) but cut dosage in 1/2. For the whey use Jarrow Whey Protein Vanilla
Other people have suggestions??
2. It requires a BIG food budget. To get you through the first week, expect to pay around 300 if you don't have any of the supplements (whey, flax oil, probotics, cranberry juice) It does get a little cheaper for the rest of the month, but as soon as you run out of the supplements... $$$
3. It requires a LOT of time for food preparation. I noticed this was probably a big issue with her first book, since she now does "left over" days. Don't be surprised if you spend 1 - 2 hours a night to prep food for the next day (assuming you work during the day).
4. Items that don't have set recipes are very hard to follow and require a LOT of interpolation. How to cook the food, how much to serve, etc.
5. No good gauge on how much food to buy. Because of number 4, you don't know if you need to buy one carrot vs 5lbs of carrots. Based on this there isn't really a shopping list for the 14-day(s) meal plans that provides. Making it VERY time consuming to go through the book and write/type down the shopping list.
In wrap up, unless you are willing to sacrifice time and money, you may want to look at another option.
If it quacks like a quack June 16, 2010 Careful Reader (New York) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
One thing I've learned over the years is that the quackier the author, the more likely the author is to use "Dr." in every mention of his or her name. Never is this so true as with "Dr." Ann Louise Gittleman.
Listen closely, readers, because your health might depend on it.
Legitimate medical doctors and scientists don't need to flash "Dr." everywhere; their credentials speak for themselves. Only wannabees and poseurs resort to the "Dr." trick. Gittleman is not a physician and her alleged PhD is from the online Clayton College of Natural Health. Here's what Quackwatch has to say about that place.
---
Many non-accredited correspondence schools issue "degrees" and certificates which suggest that the recipient is a qualified expert who can provide rational advice about nutrition or health care. These documents are promoted as though they are equivalent in meaning to established credentials--which they are not. One of the most prolific is the Clayton College of Natural Health (CCNH), of Birmingham, Alabama, which offers home-study courses leading to "degrees" and "certificates" in "natural health," traditional naturopathy, "holistic nutrition" and related subjects. "

Her book is full of "research shows this" statements but makes quacky references to "cleaning your lymph" without any substantiation of what this actually means, if anything. Ah, but people who like to keep their houses, kitchens, and cars clean probably like the idea of keeping their innards "clean." If we could take a scrub brush to our colons and "flush" out the debris, we would! But we can't, so we take the "alternative" methods from Gittleman. "Fat flush" might be a brilliant stroke of marketing, but sound medicine? Doubtful.
This 266-page book has two skimpy pages of references, which includs some 30-year old studies, many of them cherry-picked (studies must be replicated and peer-reviewed before the information is widely accepted as reliable).
Yes, she gets a few factoids right -- many vegetarians (and others) do suffer from copper overload and need to look into balancing copper with zinc. But there are not enough facts to merit her air of precise and detailed authority. Moreover, we do not know the safety of the proprietary products she promotes continuously in her books, not to mention practices such as "coffee enemas."
Most people don't need to plow through the tedium of this book (half of it is recipes and a third detailed meal plans that even the most OCD among us would find overwhelming) to know they should cut out sugar and simple carbs, exercise more, and get good sleep.
Look at all the Fat Flush books and products. This is the sign of someone who knows how to market herself and might just have some conflict of interest. But solid information? I haven't found it in this book. Proceed at your own risk.
The Best Yet!! March 3, 2010 Kevin L. Munk (Phoenix, Az) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The First Lady of Nutrition did it again. Great book for the Fat Flush Veteran or new comers. Great recipes. Some new suppliments. The book really takes a whole life approach. Easy on for people on the go to follow. This book is about your mind, body and soul and how it all relates to healthy weight loss. Two thumbs up from me.
