too much fruit in the morning, not enough vegan dinner recipes June 5, 2010 Mai First off... I'm a fan of Dr. Gillian McKeith, and I love watching her TV show. I like the book, but gave it three stars because the huge amount of fruit she suggests in the morning sends my blood sugar skyrocketing, I don't like the taste of the herbal drinks she recommends, and I'd like to see more vegan dinner recipes. What I like about this book is that the plan is explained well, and there are many recipes that are different, interesting, and easy to make. So I think for most people the book would be great, it just doesn't work in its entirety for me.
slim for life is a great book very helpful helps you know what foods are good for you a must have January 30, 2010 James Watkins (us. ca.) sorry it took so long but the book is great it really helps to let you know what kind of food will help you pick the best foods for you. this book is very helpful.
a good guide with good recipes, but not easily put into action December 31, 2009 Happy Girl (Missouri) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
You know, I really like this book. I love her show, You are what you eat. I love the information in this book. It makes sense. Some of the recipes are now my favorites...
However...
we purchased this because my husband, who has the good/bad luck to be married to a health nut like me, finally decided awhile ago that he wanted to do an all natural cleanse through diet. Other cleanses (which use supplements) tend to make him very sick and weak, so I suggested that just a balanced approach to eating that forces nothing would be his best bet...
My main qualm with this is Cost/Time. As mentioned above, great info, great recipes. Love the gal. However, we spent a LOT more on those first days of groceries than we usually do...and I am an organic, mostly raw food eater. Also, time. Since it was my hubby's deal (for once) he decided to spearhead it...and he wound up so frustrated and tired after spending his 2-3 hours each night after work preparing. (I was also working and did not have time to help much.)
Bottom line...if you are wealthy and have time, go for it. If you are an average joe, this has great suggestions and ideas and I hope you do buy it! But forgive yourself if you are not able to go whole hog with it; pardon the pun.
You might also skip the bonus days at the beginning that include a 2 day prep time and fat flush...seemed appealing at first, but since it was 3 days before my hubby got to enjoy chewing, I think he would have lasted longer and had more of a cleanse if he would not have had a lack of sensory experience...doing all that work and not getting to sit down and chew really drained him...the good natural food would indeed have been a good enough cleanse had he kept it up, but after day 5 (with only 2 - 3 days of actual food) he gave up.
Ps--not the easiest thing to do in a rainy or cold season. Especially that fasting portion (juices). There we were, drinking liters of fresh (and delicious) juice on the rainiest days of Spring, wishing for warm, comfort food. Would be better served to try during warmer, dryer months. But go for it...at least a little at a time.
GREAT BOOK September 6, 2009 Kimberley A. Raye (San Diego, ca United States) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this book used just to check it out because I liked the show and I need to be healthier! The book is great and you will not be hungry if you eat daily what she suggests. My favorite is the mango peach smoothie!!! It is time intensive. Every night I make my lunch for the following day and partially prepair my dinner so it takes less time when I get home in the eve. It's only been 2 weeks and well grocery's can be expensive because I've been going to the health food store but I feel better!!! It has curbed my sweet cravings!! I dont care if she is a dr or not this beek has helped me make better choices.
Great book!!! July 11, 2009 S. Meyers (VA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a great book. She really gives you a healthy diet and motivates you to eat well. It is difficult to find all of the ingredients, but you make do. I had to substitute some of the beans. You can eat as much as you want of the right food. So if your hungry afterwards, you can eat more salad, fruit, etc. The first two days were hard, but after that, I felt great. I was not hungry, and I felt very healthy. I have already lost a few inches and pounds. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get healthy. This is not a book for someone looking for a quick weigh loss fad diet.
